TWO elephants died in the state on Tuesday. While one elephant calf died at Dhamtari in a swamp, another elephant was electrocuted at Pathalgaon, Raigarh. The death of the elephants has created a furore in State particularly after death of an elephant in the Palakkad district of Kerala where the elephant ate a pineapple stacked with fire crackers.
An elephant died after it got stuck in a marsh in village Mongari on Monday night. A team of Forest Department reached the spot and took the elephant out of the marsh on Tuesday morning. Elephant’s postmortem has been done on the spot, said departmental sources. According to information, a herd of 21 elephants had entered the Magarlod Forest Division via Gariaband. A few days ago, some people saw the herd grazing in Nagri forest and Gangrel’s submerged area.
When the herd of elephants were grazing near Mongari-Urpuri, a baby elephant of age 1.5 to 2 years, got stuck in the marsh and died. On receiving the information, DFO Amitabh Bajpayee, Ranger RK Sahu and a team of Forest department reached the spot and took the baby elephant out. DFO Amitabh Bajpayee informed that the baby elephant had stuck in the marsh on Monday night and was taken out the next morning. He said that post-mortem has been done on the spot.
