A JMFC Court on Wednesday extended the police custody remand (PCR) of self-styled social worker and alleged blackmailer Preeti Jyotirmaya Das till June 20. A resident of Plot No. 25, Priyadarshini Housing Society, Kamptee Road, Preeti (39) was arrested by Pachpaoli Police on charges of cheating after Sessions Court had turned down her anticipatory bail plea. Das had allegedly targeted Umesh alias Guddu Devishankar Tiwari (50) on social media.
Also a resident of Pachpaoli area, Tiwari befriended her on Facebook and fell into her trap. After promising to marry Tiwari, she started blackmailing him. She allegedly extorted over Rs 14.87 lakh from Tiwari from time to time by threatening to implicate him in a false criminal case. Finally, Tiwari lodged a complaint against her on June 3. As Preeti’s PCR ended on Wednesday, police produced her before the court. Seeking extension of her PCR, the prosecution told the court that accused Preeti was not cooperating with the police in the investigation. Citing grounds for extension of the accused’s PCR, the prosecution informed the court that police found two PAN cards with different numbers from her house.
She had opened bank accounts in the names of her friends and relatives and deposited the money. For conducting an indepth probe in the case, her further custodial interrogation was necessary. Defence lawyer Adv Ashok Raghute strongly opposed to further remanding his client to police custody as police had already interrogated her for four days. After hearing both the sides, the court extended her PCR till June 20.
