With the shrinkage of open land with trees, bushes and shrubs near city, the heritage of small wild animals has landed in trouble. One such rare animal pangolin, falling in the category of scheduled I animal in Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, entered in the house of Mayur Shrirame, Resident of Dighori, last night, creating panic among the family members.
After calling for help, neighbours reached the spot to see the animal anxiously. Upon getting information, Monu Singh of Vidarbha Sarpmitra Committee immediately intimated Ashish Mendhe considering the matter serious. Mendhe and other sarpmitras including Mayur Kuratkar, Nikhil Nagpure and Piyush Puri reached the spot, informed reliable sources.
The rescue team quelled the crowd and found the pangolin in the premises. The members then rescued the animal with skill and handed it over to forestmen at Transit Treatment Centre, Seminary Hills, after performing panchnama before A S Katkade, Forest Guard. The scientific name of this mammal is Manis Crassicaudata. It lives in bushes and shrubs and feeds on ants and insects. Smugglers are poaching this animal for its scales and other body parts.
