The newly-constructed bridge on river Wainganga near village Sunwara on road connecting Seoni district with Bheemgarh township was swept away in the flood water on Sunday morning. The bridge was recently opened for public use around a month ago without any formal inauguration. According to information, following incessant rains in catchment areas of Sanjay Sarovar and Bheemgarh dam, water was discharged by opening all the gates of the biggest mud-made dam.

Besides continuous heavy rains in previous week in the district and water discharge from the dam was increased and the river is still running above danger mark. In the turbulent flow of flood-water, the bridge collapsed exposing the inferior quality of the construction. According to information, the bridge was constructed with a cost of Rs 3 crore in Keolari Assembly constituency of Seoni district under the head of Prime Minister Rural Road Project.

The incident has affected around 80 villages and the Bheemgarh township was cut off from the district headquarters. Around 2,000 people have been affected. Total 430 people have been evacuated in nine relief camps. Accommodation, drinking water, medicine and food are being arranged by the local administration for the flodd-affected people. Due to the floods, water-logging affected 15 villages in Seoni tehsil, 4 villages in Kurai, 14 villages in Keolari, 25 villages of Lakhandaun, in Majhagowan of Dhanora, two villages of Ghansaur and 20 villages of Chhapara tehsil. People had some relief after the rain stopped on Sunday.
