Vidarbha region is now facing severe flood due to heavy rains in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh and Nagpur district of Vidarbha for past couple of days. More than 26,490 people from 48 villages of four Talukas in Nagpur district have been shifted to safer places so far. Though the rains in Madhya Pradesh have stopped and the water level in Kanhan river was also decreasing, the rescue operations were underway on a war-footing and the situation is under control. Guardian Minister Dr Nitin Raut and District Collector Ravindra Thakare, on Sunday morning visited the flood-affected villages and took stock of the situation. Dr Raut instructed officials concerned to conduct quick survey of the losses. He also assured the affected villagers that Government would give quick compensation to every one after the survey. In Khaparkheda taluka, Bina river was flowing over the danger mark and several roads in the villages are cut off, thus, affecting the connectivity with the villages.
Similarly, villages in Parseoni taluka were cut off due to the overflowing Singardeep river. Total 1,158 families of 18 villages in Mouda taluka got affected due to floods in Kanhan river. However, the affected-people were shifted to shelter camps by the administration. On Sunday, the district administration distributed 750 food packets and drinking water in Singardeep village of Parseoni taluka through helicopter. Indian Army, Indian Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) were pressed into action to handle the flood situation and rescue operations.
Heavy rains in Chhindwara district increased the water level in Pench river which led to opening of all gates of Chaurai Dam by the Madhya Pradesh (MP) administration. In a cascading effect, Nagpur district administration has to open all 14 gates of Totladoh Dam and 16 gates of Kamptee Khairi. Water released from Totladoh and Kamptee Khairi inundated Kamptee, Mouda, Parseoni and Kuhi tehsils. Pench water further merged into Kanhan river near Kamptee, leaving parts of the town submerged. As requested by civil administration to assist the locals in flooded areas of Kuhi in Umrer Taluka, UMANG Sub Area of Indian Army has pressed two columns (teams) overnight for rescue and relief operations.
The teams are assisting the civil administration in rescue of local villagers stranded in submerged areas of Kuhi and around as also will help civil administration in restoring normalcy in these inundated areas. Similarly, a massive tragedy was averted as these troops relentlessly worked throughout the intervening night of August 29 and 30 to provide succour to the civilians living in Gora Bazaar, Chhoti Ajni, Oothkhana and Godown area of Kamptee.
The Kamptee Cantonment Board also chipped in with their efforts to relocate the affected population including livestock, providing water and cooked food. Electricity through Generators was provided as the main power supply had to be shut down to avoid electrocution. Army troops went beyond the call of duty and provided cooked meals to stranded villagers in and around Kamptee cantonment. Drinking water was made available in tanks in the villages. Inspite of Army units themselves getting inundated with flood water, the relief of civilian population was given priority and relief operations continued overnight. Similarly, a search and rescue team of Fire and Emergency Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) also came in action when they got information about flood in Valni village in Mauda taluka on Sunday. The team of NMC Fire Department rescued many villagers and shifted them to shelter camps.
