State Health Department has released an advisory for the citizens to protect themselves against typhoid and other water borne diseases. The advisory reads that as the climatic conditions change, the possibility of getting ill due to typhoid and other waterborne diseases increases. Typhoid, also known as periodic fever is caused by a bacterium called Salmonella Typhi and it generally breeds in contaminated water or in infected food and consumption of which sickens a person.
High fever, body pain, weakness, headache, stomachache, loss of appetite are the main symptoms of typhoid. The citizens should immediately visit the nearest health centre and undergo treatment on the onset of these symptoms. They should drink filtered and boiled water and should also avoid eating food outside. The vegetables and fruits purchased from vendors should be washed first before consumption and one should always wash hands with soap before eating.
Personal hygiene is must and ensure cleanliness around the house. The food items should be stored while covered with a lid and a handled-mug should be used to drink water. The door-handles, telephones and water taps should be sanitised frequently.
