CHIRANJEEV Prasad, a 1996-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as Special Inspector General of Police (Nagpur Range) on Thursday. Earlier, Prasad was Commissioner of Police (CP) in Aurangabad. K M M Prasanna, who was Special IGP (Nagpur Range) has been shifted to Aurangabad Range in the same capacity. Nikhil Gupta, also of the rank of Special IGP, will be the new CP of Aurangabad. Gupta has been asked to take over the new assignment on his return from Central deputation. Ravindra Singhal, Special IGP (Aurangabad Range) has been transferred to Mumbai as Controller of Legal Metrology Department with the State Government temporarily downgrading the post to the rank of Special IGP.
 
Prasad has served as Superintendent of Police in Aurangabad (Rural) and Jalna between 2002-2005. Prasad, who was also one of the members of the Special Squad constituted to probe 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes, had played an important role in the formation of Maharashtra Police’s specialised commando unit --Force One -- in the bakdrop of the Pak-sponsored attack on the country’s financial capital.
 
Prasad had worked as DIG Nagpur for some time. He was then sent to Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for anti-Naxalite operations in Bihar and Chhattisgarh. He also served as Inspector General of Police in Nanded division.
