Koriya police while taking initiative towards becoming child friendly has set up its first child-friendly police station in the district. Chandra Mohan, Superintendent of Police in Koriya district, has stated that all police stations in the district will be made child friendly. On his visit to the child-friendly police station in Jhagrakhand today, he said that the police station has separate space for children for recreation, a designated child welfare officer, a woman in civil dress to address child-related offences and all officers demonstrate child-friendly behaviour.

The police station has reduced the pendency case rate to 1.2 per cent. The station was able to find 97 per cent of the missing children in the district and reduce the crime against children. SP Chandra Mohan said that the remaining 11 police stations in the district will be made child-friendly as well. Mohan added that the innovative student police cadet programme will be introduced in the district soon. Vijay Singh, SHO of Jhagrakhand PS, said that the initiative helped us to be welcoming for women and children. We were able to transform the police station and our staff to be receptive and sensitive towards addressing the grievances of women and children.

According to information, the innovative child-friendly police initiative aims to build a conducive and child-friendly environment in stations and engage with children. Under the initiative, police will also visit schools and interact with children and hear their grievances. Children will also visit the police station to know about functions and roles.

Job Zachariah, Chief, UNICEF, Chhattisgarh said police is the first point of contact in all cases relating to the violation of child rights and therefore they can play an important role to prevent child marriage, child labour, child sex abuse, child trafficking and violence against children. The initiative will further build rapport between the police and the community, he added.

The Members of Media Collective for Child Rights (MCCR) including Rajesh Soni, D C Baghel and Ranjith Singh attended the event among others.
