Lt Gen Joy Chatterjee of Nagpur from Armed Forces Medical Services has been appointed as the President of India’s Honorary Surgeon. He is an alumnus of SFS Higher Secondary School and Hislop College, Nagpur.
During his 39 years of distinguished meritorious service, Lt Gen Joy Chatterjee has held prestigious appointments like Director & Commandant, Army Hospital Research and Referral; officiating Director General Medical Services, Army; and Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces).
During COVID-19 pandemic, Lt Gen Joy Chatterjee was instrumental in steering the planning, preparation and optimisation of the country’s military hospitals with his able superintendence towards rendering yeoman’s service and saving numerous lives. He is a recipient of Vishisht Seva Medal, and Commander-in-Chief Commendation on three occasions.
Lt Gen Joy Chatterjee is Professor and post-graduate teacher in Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, and Delhi University. He attributes his lifetime achievements to his parents Sumita and late Maj H M Chatterjee, his wife Anjana, daughter Janine, and his brothers Maj Gen Chandan and Dr Anjan Chatterjee. He is the great grandson of Late Rai Saheb Dr Radhika Prasad Banerjee, former Civil Surgeon, Mayo Hospital, Nagpur.
Lt Gen Joy Chatterjee has been appointed as the President of India’s Honorary Surgeon, with effect from November 6, 2021. The appointment is for the term of the President or till the officer’s retirement or as long as the President may be pleased.
Standing eighth in the order of merit in his Std XII exams, Lt Gen Joy Chatterjee completed MBBS from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. Thereafter, he did his MD (Anesthesiology) and post doctoral training in Paediatric Anesthesia from Mumbai University. In 2006, he completed his Fellowship in Liver Transplant Anesthesia from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, UK.
He is a renowned Paediatric and Liver Transplant Anaesthetist and was a member of the first Liver Transplant team of the Armed Forces at Army Hospital Research and Referral that successfully carried out more than a hundred liver transplants including in infants and small children during 2007-11.
