A man drove an on-duty traffic police personnel for several metres on the bonnet of his car when the cop jumped and sat on the bonnet to stop the four-wheeler on Saturday. The incident took place at Panchsheel Square. Police have registered a case under provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) against the car driver. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic Sarang Awhad informed ‘The Hitavada’ that the car was at great speed and jumped a signal at Morris College T-point at around 2.15 pm. The on-duty traffic police personnel issued an alert on the wireless. Constable Sagar Hiwrale immediately noticed the car waiting for a signal to turn green at Panchsheel Square, said the DCP. The cop immediately rushed towards the car and asked the driver to stop the vehicle for violating the traffic norm. However, the driver was unable to understand due to noise, he said.

As soon as the signal turned green, the driver accelerated the vehicle. The traffic cop jumped and sat on the bonnet even as the driver moved the vehicle ahead. The car was stopped after driving the constable on the bonnet for around 50 metres, said DCP Awhad. An eye-witness said that the car was stopped by two bikers. The driver -- identified as Sagar Bhujade (45), a resident of Gandhibagh, Itwari -- alighted the vehicle and informed the policeman that he was rushing an ailing woman to the hospital. Staff of Sitabuldi police station and traffic police also rushed to the spot. DCP Awhad informed that an ailing patient with sugar level at 350 was being taken to the hospital of Dr Himanshu Patil in the car. The police officials cross checked the information and released the car after initiating action under Sections 186, 184, 239, 179 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
