The School Education Department of Maharashtra has relaxed the minimum age criterion for admission to nursery to Class 1. It will be implemented from the academic year 2022-23. The Department had on September 18, 2020, fixed the cut-off date as December 31 for the minimum age for school admission. The cut-off date had created some difficulties for the children born in October, November and December for the admissions in schools. The department has taken serious cognizance of the problem and changed the minimum age criteria for admission for the academic year 2022-23. Now the new rule says, children born between October 1, 2018, and December 31, 2019, and completed the minimum age of three years as of December 31, 2022, are considered as eligible to take admission to Nursery. Similarly, the criterion for junior KG too has been changed.
The children born between October 1, 2017, and December 31, 2018, and who have completed the minimum age of four years as of December 31, 2022 will be considered as eligible for the admissions, can take admission to junior KG (kindergarten). The eligibility for the admissions to senior KG was changed. The new rule says, children born between October 1, 2016, to December 31, 2017, and completed the minimum age of five years as of December 31, 2022, are eligible for senior KG admission. For Class 1 admission, the minimum age criterion is the completion of six years as of December 31, 2022. The children should have been born between October 1, 2015, and December 31, 2016. The Education Department has made it clear that the age limit can be flexible for pre-primary admission and no school should deny admission to children by citing any age issue. No upper limit is decided for admissions and it can be kept flexible.
