NAGPUR Star got off to a winning start on the opening day of the JSW Senior Division Football Tournament on Wednesday. The Nagpur District Football Association organised league competition is being played at the newly-constructed Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Football Stadium in Suyog Nagar in North Nagpur. In the opening encounter Nagpur Star defeated Maverick Football Club by two goals to nil to earn three full points. The Group A encounter saw Nagpur Star making early forays on opponent’s citadel from the word go.

The winners succeeded in finding the gap in Maverick defence in the fifth minute when a composed Babu Francis bulged the net. The lead was swelled in the 16th minute when Sankalp Kaware dribbled past Maverick defence and slotted the ball home to make it 2-0. Nagpur Star changed the end with a two-goal cushion. The second half saw Nagpur Star saving their energy and stamina and did not allow Marverick any space in their area. Four minutes before whistle Maverick managed to reduce the margin through Kapil Dixit but it was too late to make a comeback as Nagpur Star walked away with full points.
 
Nagpur Star’s Mohit Warghade and Pradip Thakur were cautioned for dangerous play. Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Salim Baig, Chairman, NDFA Disciplinary Committee. On the occasion, NDFA President Haresh Vora, Secretary Iqbal Kashmiri, Tournament Convenor Abid Khan, Khalid Ansari, Stanley Gregory, Eugene Norbert, Atmaram Pandey, Mohammad Mubin, Vinod Tiwari, Abdul Latif, Hemant Sahani, Sanjay Kathale, Ramu Naidu and others were present. On Thursday: Rahul Academy vs Green Flag (1 pm); Ansari FC vs Al Fateh FC (3.30 pm).
