Soon Nagpur IIM to have campuses at Pune and Hyderabad

Dr Bhimaraya Metri, the new Director of Indian Institute of Management-Nagpur (IIM-N) has played a major role in enhancement of physical and intellectual infrastructure and increased the strength of PGDM programmes for successfully positioning MDI Gurgaon, IMI Delhi and IIM Tiruchirappalli amongst the leading Business Schools of the country. Dr Metri was bestowed with several prestigious awards and recognitions. Dr Metri is the only serving
IIM Director to receive the country’s prestigious AIMA-Kewal Nohria Award for Academic Leadership in Management Education.
Dr Metri who has taken charge of Nagpur IIM aims at figuring the institute in the list of top 10 institutes of Management in the country. He is not making tall promises, but he has chalked out the plan that would make his dream get fulfilled. The application too has begun. Soon Nagpur IIM to have campuses in Pune and later on in Hyderabad. Dr Metri shared his dream plan with ‘The Hitavada’ in a detailed discussion.
“I am confident that I could do it. I always kept my vision for my institute very high. So the things that I planned in a way that my dream would be fulfilled. To make grow the institute, one has to do certain things. One must have the vision for the institute. This institute has born as the 14th in the country. My objective is of five years where I want to take my institute at a height. Based on my experience in Trichy, BITS Pilani, L and T, I can assertively say,” said Dr Metri.
IIM, Nagpur is running PGDM course. This year it has announced PhD work. Next year IIM Nagpur would start executive Phd programme.
“Any institute earns name when it does lot of research. We will be promoting our research by starting related programmes. These programmes would earn IIM Nagpur a name in the list of institutes that do lot of research. We will be starting programmes for working executives,” pointed out Dr Metri.
“In Nagpur there are three MIDCs, MIHAN. In MIHAN there is TCS, Lupin, Mahindra, HCL, Boeing MRI. Defence set-up is here apart from Forest Department and other Government departments. We will run a programme where Executives would be given a training of skill. Initially the intake capacity of the programme would be 60. Sharpening of the skills of working executives would be our motto. The IIM Nagpur will set the talent pool of the area and around,” stated Dr Metri.
“IIM, Nagpur will be opening its campus in Pune in October-November. It is our responsibility to open it. If we don’t do it then any other IIM would do it as every IIM has the freedom to open their campuses in other cities. In next year one would see our campus in Hyderabad too. Since IIM Nagpur is the only one in Maharashtra, it would be wise to have its satellite campus in Pune,” informed Dr Metri. Dr Metri is the first Indian elected as the Vice President, Asia Pacific Division, Decision Sciences Institute (DSI).
Dr Metri, has worked as Member, Expert Group for implementation of New Education Policy (NEP) -2020 and has served on the board of Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), Houston, Texas, USA. Dr Metri has also served earlier as a member of various national committees of higher education constituted by government and professional bodies.
Elaborating on the E-learning programes, Dr Metri said, “Eight programmes will begin. They include Information system, strategy, marketing etc. The 9th programme that IIM Nagpur starting is first in India. It is international certificate programme to be run jointly by University of Memphis School and IIM Nagpur with Fedex institute. The course is named as Cybersecurity. Today most businesses are run on digital platform all over the world and cyber security is the major issue. We are in the heart of India. There is one similarity between Nagpur and Memphis as both are under cotton belt.”
Dr Metri has led the two Indian delegations to Bali, Indonesia for ISO/ TC 260 and to Amersfoort, Netherlands for ISO/ TC 251, for development of international standards.
IIM Nagpur under the leadership of Dr Metri has achieved 100% placements and became only the fourth IIM in the country. There is one percent increase in the highest package than what it was last year. This achievement of placement is creditable as Institute could do it despite pandemic.
IIM Nagpur under the leadership of Dr Metri will be spreading its wings. It is going to provide short term training courses by joining hands with HCL Technologies. Institute has already started discussion in that regard. It is working on some long term education programmes too.
Dr Metri during his tenure as Director, IIM, Trichy had initiated a Vice-Chancellor leaderhips programmes where all the VCs of state came together and discussed the plans. The theme was ‘Changing the role of universities in the era of industries’. UGC Chairman too had come for the inauguration. “We had gone to meet Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of Tamil Nadu and Chancellor of Universities in State. He had given us the Chancellor’s Vision,” commented Dr Metri.
