It is for the first time in the history of Architecture admissions that now the score of National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) will be accepted during the admissions to the architecture courses run by Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), School of Planning and Architecture. Thanks to Habib Khan, President of Council of Architecture and a Nagpurian that the long-pending dispute over this issue has come to an end. As per Council Regulations of 2020, candidates need to qualify an Aptitude Test in Architecture conducted by the Council for admission to B.Arch. course.

Therefore, aspirants for B.Arch. course need to register themselves at the portal www.nata.in for NATA 2021 for admission to B.Arch course, irrespective of place of study, institution, deemed University, university centrally funded, state funded or private or any other place offering B.Arch degree. Meanwhile, Council of Architecture (COA) has conducted second National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) 2021 successfully on Sunday. It was held across 248 centres in India and 6 centres internationally. Out of 25,860 candidates applied for the second test, 21,659 candidates appeared for the examination. Habib Khan, the President has been reviewing every single aspect regarding holding the test. In view of the ongoing pandemic/subsequent lockdowns/inability of some of the candidates due to corona infection/ due to other reasons, candidates could not appear for second NATA, Council in the larger interest of aspiring candidates, has decided to conduct one more NATA Test in the month of August, 2021. Further details will be made available on NATA website www.nata.in. However, one candidate can appear for maximum two attempts and the final result shall be the best of two scores.

After conduct of NATA 2021, admissions shall be carried out by the concerned competent authorities of the respective states/institutions based on Merit as per valid NATA score and marks of qualifying examination as stipulated in the relevant regulations. The Council of Architecture (COA) has been constituted by the Government of India under the Architects Act, 1972. The Act was enacted by the Parliament of India and came into force with effect from September 1, 1972. The Act provides for registration of Architects, standards of education, recognized qualifications and standards of professional conduct and etiquette to be complied with by the architects. The Council of Architecture (CoA) had introduced National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) in 2006 and the main objective of the Council was to avoid great hardships and incurring of huge cost by the hapless candidates seeking admission in architecture course, in applying for individual aptitude tests for various schools in different states and traveling all over India for appearing in examinations, which deprived them of an opportunity to apply for admission in schools of their choice, while at the same time also doing away with the redundant exercise of conducting different aptitude tests by the schools and other authorities.

NATA is an aptitude test and evaluates the aptitude of a candidate to study architecture. It measures the aptitude of the applicant for specific field of study, i.e. Architecture, through assessment of cognitive skills, visual perception and aesthetic sensitivity tests, logical reasoning and critical thinking ability, etc., besides the learning that the candidate has acquired over the past few years and is related to the specific field of study. NATA has been designed to assess the aptitude of candidates using different testing formats & techniques. Unlike any other entrance examination, NATA is an Aptitude test that assesses a candidate's innate ability and aptitude, through a variety of testing formats and cannot be taught, learnt or induced. Attending coaching classes or similar training may not substantially improve the aptitude of a candidate. The test is based upon learning up till 12th standard and apart from that it tries to find out the aptitude of a candidate to learn architecture. In view of the Pandemic of Covid-19, the Council, with approval the Central Government, has also relaxed the eligibility for admission to 1st year of 5-year B.Arch. Degree Course, as prescribed by the Council under Regulation 4 (1) of the Council of Architecture (Minimum Standards of Architectural Education) Regulations, 2020, for the academic session 2021-2022. Now, candidates who have passed an examination at the end of the 10+2 scheme of examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects or 10+3 Diploma Examination with Mathematics as compulsory subject, are eligible to seek admission in the B.Arch. Course for the academic session 2021-2022.
