The patients suffering from heart diseases, even with conditions as serious as cardiac arrest, have to return without treatment from the premium health institute in Bhopal, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), in the absence of a cardiologist.AIIMS, Bhopal, holds the hopes of not only Bhopalites but also the people in the entire State, but even after 10 years, the arrangements here have hardly gotten any better. Along with no cardiologist appointed, there are three vacant posts of consultants at the Cardiology Department from the past 10 years. Surprisingly, four directors have also changed here at AIIMS in these 10 years but no heed was paid to the matter. Now, the question arises, who ultimately is responsible for this situation? Had AIIMS management made arrangements before the resignation of Dr Gaurav Khandelwal, the only cardiologist, the patients would not have suffered.Dr Khandelwal was supposed to go to Mount Sinai Hospital Medicine in New York for a one-year fellowship on Advanced Cardiovascular Interventions. He had written a letter to the AIIMS administration seeking permission for this in September 2021. But, the permission was denied. In such a situation, Dr Khandelwal had sought unpaid leave from the AIIMS management. Not only this, on his return from fellowship, he was ready to make a contract to provide services in AIIMS itself. But the officials did not allow them. So, he was left with no other option but to resign.
