“Geological Survey of India (GSI) of Union Ministry of Mines has given consent for Geological Park at Lamhetaghat in Jabalpur,” informed Member of Parliament Rakesh Singh while addressing a press conference, on Sunday. He said Lamheta Formation is discussed all over the world and now UNESCO has also considered it as a Geo Heritage Site. Singh said work of handling and preserving geological structures has been done all over the world, but it was missing in our country. Hence, he had made untiring efforts for the same and his efforts bore sweet fruit as Jabalpur has got the honour of setting up country’s first Geo Park.
Singh said the Geological Park will be built with an estimated cost of Rs 35 crore and GSI has also approved an amount of Rs 1.30 crore for making DPR. Singh said concept of Geo Park is new in our country, so it has its own special importance.
MP Singh further informed that Geo Park will be built on about 5 acres of land to preserve the heritage of Geology. He said the country’s first Geo Park to be built in Jabalpur will prove to be a milestone in the study of development of human civilisation along with geological formations and development of tourism and culture. Singh said he has also made efforts for a Science Centre in Jabalpur. He informed that all formalities have been completed for establishment of Sub-Regional Science Centre and soon bhoomipujan for the centre will be done. District administration has already allotted 7 acres of land to Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology. A total amount of Rs 15.20 crore is to be spent on establishment of Science Centre, out of which Rs 8.65 crore will be spent by the State Government and Rs 6.55 crore will be spent by the National Council of Science Museums, Kolkata, Ministry of Culture. He said students will get due benefit from Geo Park and Science Centre to be established in Jabalpur, while it will also boost the tourism industry of the region.
