Medical Education Department of Maharashtra Government has appointed Dr Raj Gajbhiye, Head of Department of Surgery as Dean of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). This appointment has been made through direct recruitment. Dr Gajbhiye was given an additional charge of Dean when Dr Sudhir Gupta, the then Dean, was on medical leave for long duration of time.
Dr Gajbhiye did MBBS from GMCH only in 1981. After MBBS, he got admission in Department of Surgery for Post Graduation. After his PG, he worked in GMCH for some time, and later joined Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) as Lecturer. In IGGMCH, he remained for a long time where he got promoted as Associate Professor and then Professor. He was Head of Department in Surgery at IGGMCH and introduced several patient-centric facilities. Dr Gajbhiye pioneered bariatric surgery in IGGMCH. This surgery is very costly in private healthcare institutions but its introduction in Government set-up benefited needy obese patients.
A die-hard surgeon and a tough administrator Dr Gajbhiye was transferred to GMCH, his alma mater. Now, he has become Dean of GMCH.
Dr Sudhir Gupta, has been relieved from the post of Dean. The letter issued by Medical Education Department said that there were several complaints received against Dr Gupta. Accordingly, a report was submitted to Medical Education Commissioner by Director. On the basis of recommendation by Commissioner the responsibility of the post of Dean being handled by Dr Sudhir Gupta has been withdrawn and a separate decision will be taken regarding his posting, said the order issued by Medical Education Department.
Dr Sudhir Gupta, a stalwart Gastroenterologist has contributed a lot to develop Super Speciality Hospital and its several departments. During his short tenure as Dean, Dr Gupta introduced several new things for the benefit of poor patients in GMCH.
He gave momentum to several projects which got sanctioned earlier. He tried to streamline OPD system, looked personally into lining up the surgeries, emphazised on cleanliness.
