More attraction is in store for visitors as palm civets, reticulated pythons, pheasants and mongoose will be the new guests at Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoo soon.
The animals will be part of the exchange programme between Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling; Pilikula Biological Park, Mangalore and Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM).
Under this exchange programme, Gorewada Zoo will get 4 palm civets, 6 reticulated pythons, 8 pheasants and 4 mongoose from Darjeeling and Mangalore Zoo, informed S S Bhagvat, Divisional Manager, Gorewada Zoo project to ‘The Hitavada’.
“Central Zoo Authority (CZA) gave the green signal to initiate the exchange programme and till February 2023 we will receive the animals and reptiles from Darjeeling and Mangalore,” said Bhagwat. In reply, two pairs of albino black bucks and two pairs of Neelgai will be shifted from Gorewada Zoo to Darjeeling and Mangalore zoo.
The palm civet is also known as common palm civet, toddy cat and musang, is a native to South and Southeast Asia. Reticulated python is the world’s longest snake, and is among the three heaviest. It is native to South and Southeast Asia. Similarly, pheasant is a bird which can be found all over the world in captive populations, the pheasant genera native range is restricted to Eurasia. Gorewada zoo authority will keep these animals in a special enclosure prepared for small animals and reptiles. After completion of the walking trail that is under construction in the zoo premises, the special enclosure will open for visitors, informed Bhagwat. Gorewada zoo already have 54 animals of nine different species like tiger, leopard, sloth bear, black buck, nilgai, barking deer etc.
