Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has added a set of 40 electric buses to its fleet of city buses . These buses were delivered by M/s Evey Trans Pvt. Ltd., a Hyderabad-based firm. The civic body had received subsidy of Rs 45 lakh per bus from Central Government under Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicle (FAME-II) scheme.
As city buses were one of the prime sources of air pollution, Central Government had decided to promote emission-free public utility vehicles. Since NMC did not have that much deep pockets, the Union Government has been purchasing the electric buses on behalf of the civic body. NMC has one fully equipped charging depot at Lakadganj where these buses would be re-charged.
Another charging depot has been planned at Wadi. But the same is yet to be operationalised as the required
power supply is not yet made available by State-run Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited. Hence, of the 40 buses, only 22 vehicles would ply on city roads during first phase as the charging ports are lesser in number. Only when Wadi-based charging depot gets commissioned, the remaining 20 buses would ply on the roads.
The new buses have low floor and hence provide easy entry and exit for the commuters. Maintenance cost of electric buses that way is negligible and hence NMC would save lot of money on fuel.
