IT IS a dream for everybody to emulate his/her idol and if possible to become better. City’s very own Malvika Bansod has pipped Saina Nehwal to become India’s second best women’s singles player in the world.
In the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) Rankings that was released on Tuesday, Malvika jumped two rungs to be ranked 32nd, one step over Saina. Malvika is second only to double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, who has a world ranking of seven. The 21-year-old left-handed Malvika, who occupied the 34th spot for the last few weeks, surpassed her idol Saina with 37310 points in her kitty.
Early in the year, Malvika had become just the second Indian to beat Saina in an international event when she emerged champion in the India Open Super 500 tournament in New Delhi. Saina is at 33rd with 36920 points while Malvika’s closest Indian young rival Aakarshi Kashyap is at 35th.
