In an attempt to increase its coal production, the Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has roped in a private party to start mining operations in an underground mine that was closed for about two decades.
The ‘Miniratna’ Company has issued a Letter of Award (LoA) to Vensar Construction Company Limited for re-opening, rehabilitation, development and operation of Walni underground mine, recently. The private player will have to start mining within the next three to nine months.
The LoA is for a period of 25 years and a total projected coal production during the period will be 6.05 million tonnes. The LoA, on revenue sharing basis, is the first initiative of its kind, by WCL and third in Coal India Limited.
In a meeting between organisations concerned at the WCL Headquarters, WCL CMD Manoj Kumar handed over the LoA to B P Singh of Vensar Construction Company Limited.
Kumar, expressing his optimism about the new initiative, said that the operations at Walni Mine would start shortly. This would have its important contribution to the national coal requirements, he added.
Director Technical (Operations) J P Dwivedi, Director Technical (Project & Planning) A K Singh, Chief Vigilance Officer Mukesh Kumar Mishra, Technical Secretary to CMD Tarun Kumar Shrivastav and General Manager (CMC) A P Singh also were present on the occasion.
It is pertinent to mention that the Ministry of Coal, GoI had initiated a campaign to meet the Coal requirements of the Nation. WCL, through this LoA, has contributed significantly to the Ministry’s campaign.
