MAHARASHTRA Government, on Friday, appointed Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) chief Rajnish Seth as the new Director General of Police (DGP). Nagpurians would recall that DGP Seth’s father S K Seth had served in Nagpur as Commissioner of Police in mid-80s. Known as a humble and prompt officer, S K Seth was the Nagpur CP from November 1985 to July 1989. Rajnish Seth got selected as Indian Police Service (IPS) officer when his father was heading the Nagpur police force. An ex-police officer who had worked with Senior Seth informed ‘The Hitavada’ that Sr Seth used to be first at crime spot even before the then Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) or Police Inspectors who would subsequently arrive.

In one instance, a girl was kidnapped from Ajni area by an autorickshaw driver. Sensing seriousness of the matter, Seth camped at Sitabuldi police station till the girl was rescued, recalled an old timer. Ex-Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik and Ex-DGP Ajit Parasnis were serving as the DCPs in Nagpur city and they were reporting to Seth as Nagpur CP. Interestingly, Rajnish Seth, while working as Joint CP Law and Order in Mumbai, had to report to Patnaik who was Mumbai CP at that time and then DGP Parasnis. Another officer said that Sr Seth was very punctual in office work. The monthly crime meeting was like a brain-storming session for the police officers with new ideas and review of crime matters with minute details. “He liked to be on the field instead of issuing orders from the office,” said the ex-officer.
