DGP Pandey discontinues British era ‘Tunic Uniform’ for PSI to DySP

 

 

 

Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjay Pandey has discontinued wearing of British era ‘Tunic Uniform’ for officers of Police Sub-Inspector to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP). ‘Discomfort’ and ‘Financially expensive’ are the reasons cited by the DGP in his circular quoting responses from the Unit Commanders of police units. DGP Pandey, in a circular, stated that the ‘Tunic Uniform’ was discomfortable considering the geographical situation. It is also expensive.

 

The above offices should wear a cross belt and a sword on the regular uniform in the ceremonial parade, he said. A top official said that the ‘Tunic Uniform’ was the part of Maharashtra Police from the British era. Earlier, the officers had to wear the uniform for ceremonial parade or during inspection from October 2 (birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi) to January 30 (death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi).

 

Later, some changes were made in the Maharashtra Police Rules and the uniform was applicable in December and January. The uniform is the composition of a pant, shirt, tie and a coat. The officers were spending almost Rs 10,000/- on the uniform, the official said. The uniform was also worn by the officers during the inspection. However, this was not the case in Nagpur city. As no senior officer was coming from outside for inspection as the Police Commissioner was headed by an Additional Director of General of Police (ADGP) rank official, the official claimed. After the DGP’s circular, officers of SP rank and above will be eligible to wear the ‘Tunic Uniform’.
