Narmadakka alias Alluri Usharani, the 63-year-old dreaded Maoist leader who was involved in Jambhulkheda blast in Gadchiroli district in 2019 which claimed life of 15 policemen, has died of Cancer in a private hospital in Mumbai during treatment. She was arrested in 2019. Following her death, the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) has given a ‘Dandakaranya Bandh’ call on April 25.
A native of Gurwada in Guntoor district of Andhra Pradesh, Narmadakka had studied up to MA. She was wife of Naxal leader Kiran alias Sudhakar. Well-versed with Telugu, Hindi, English, she also acquired knowledge of Gondi language. She joined Naxalism in 1980, and after working in urban areas for around 16 years, went underground. According to police, she was mainly active in Bhamragarh, Etapalli, Aheri, Kasansur, Dhanora, Damrancha, Purada areas of Gadchiroli district. She had risen to rank of Member of Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) of outlawed Maoist organisation.
She also held a rank in ‘computer section’ of Maoists’ Peoples Liberation Guerrilla Army.
Narmadakka’s death is being considered as big blow to Maoist designs. As per the police records, she was accused in 66 cases including 27 of encounters, four of dacoity, eight of police murder, nine of murder of civilians, seven of arson, and 11 other offences. According to police, she used to carry AK-47 rifle and was accompanied by two women guards considering her seniority in Maoist organisation. She was also accused of terrorising people, extorting money from private contractors, setting Government property ablaze, and creating hurdles in development works.
As per the police records, Narmadakka was involved in four major incidents in which policemen were killed in Gadchiroli district. These incidents included ambush at Hattigota in Dhanora tehsil on May 21, 2009 in which 16 cops were killed, Gilanguda encounter in Bhamragarh tehsil on May 27, 2010 in which two cops attained martyrdom, landmine blast at Pustola in Dhanora tehsil on March 27, 2012 in which 13 policemen were killed and 30 others were injured, Hindur-Rekhametta encounter in Etapalli tehsil on October 28, 2013 in which one cop attained martyrdom and one was injured.
Narmadakka was said to be the mastermind of landmine blast at Jambhulkheda in Kurkheda on May 1, 2019 in which 15 policemen were killed. Following the Jambhulkheda landmine blast, which had created ripples across the State, the cops were successful in arresting Narmadakka on June 11, 2019. Since then, she was in prison. Meanwhile, she was battling Cancer. Earlier this month, she was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai where she succumbed.
