Amravati Bureau
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday declared candidature to Dr Anil Bonde, former Guardian Minister of Amravati district and General Secretary of BJP Kisan Morcha, for the Rajya Sabha (RS) election to be held on June 10. Notably, after 30 years, Amravati will get a Rajya Sabha member if Dr Bonde gets elected.
Maharashtra has 288 members in State Assembly who will elect six members to Rajya Sabha. Shiv Sena has already declared its two candidates while Congress and NCP will be announcing one candidate each. BJP, on Sunday, declared two candidates for Rajya Sabha to be elected from Maharashtra including Piyush Goyal, Union Minister, and Dr Anil Bonde. Before joining BJP, Dr Bonde was with Shiv Sena. He is two times former MLA from Morshi Assembly constituency. He got elected as an MLA from Morshi as an Independent candidate in 2009 and later just before 2014 Assembly election, he joined BJP and got elected again.
He was included in Devendra Fadnavis led State Government as an Agriculture Minister just before 2019 election and has got only 3 months time as a minister. But, he faced defeat at the hands of Devendra Bhuyar of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana in 2019 election by a huge margin.
But despite facing defeat, he continued to work vigorously for the party and showed aggression against Maha Vikas Aghadi in the State. He was also appointed as the General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party Kisan Morcha and consistently raised farmers’ issues. He is said to get the candidature as an OBC face with row over reservation to OBC in local body is getting intensive in the State.
The Rajya Sabha election has heated up in Maharashtra with Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje, a direct descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, dropping out of the race on Friday.
Now, it will be interesting to see whether seven candidates will be fielded in the election or will it be held unopposed.
