Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), in its 100th year, has appointed its first Training and Placement Officer. When Indian students are facing tough global competition, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University neither thought of that, nor it took efforts in that direction. New Vice-Chancellor Dr Subhash Chaudhari felt the need to create the post and appointed Training and Placement Officer recently.
RTMNU has around 43 Post Graduate Departments and three conducted colleges. It has about 600 colleges affiliated to it. Despite this much volume of institutions attached to it, the university bosses never thought of creating the post of Training and Placement Officer. In today’s education era, Training and Placement Officer assumes great significance, because students and parents ask for the job prospects during the admission. Why university had not appointed the Training and Placement Officer is a million dollar question.
Dr Raju Hiwase, Registrar said, “In departments, we have such officers but they are looking after the placements of their respective departments.”
Vice-Chancellor Dr Subhash Chaudhari explained, “I have worked with technical institutions and I know the importance of this post. Now, Training and Placement Officer does not work merely in assisting institutions to arrange campus interview. He or she is supposed to hold soft skill training for the students. Even a bright student, at times, fail to communicate properly or to present himself or herself in a proper manner.
The officer is expected to impart those skills in them. When I took charge, I had decided to get Training and Placement Officer appointed first. At present, we have made the temporary appointment but we will surely create a permanent post.” Registrar claimed every department of university has Training and Placement Officer, but most departments are running short of manpower. These departments give the additional responsibility of Training and Placement Officer to the person among them who obviously can’t fulfill the duties in a proper way.
Dr Chaudhari said, “We have taken all the earlier deficiencies into consideration and have sorted out them. Our new Placement Officer will not only co-ordinate with our departments but he will also remain in touch with his counterparts in affiliated colleges. We are also planning to have common campus placements together with RTMNU’s initiative.”
Dr Bhushan Mahajan, who has engineering background, has taken charge of Training and Placement Officer. While talking to ‘The Hitavada’, Dr Mahajan elaborated, “I have started contacting all my fellow colleagues in other colleges as well as in our departments. It will take at least two to three months. But I am confident that by next year we will get some good results.”
