Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), on Tuesday, issued a closure notice to Ashtavinayak Plastic Industries, W-1/1, MIDC Hingna Road for manufacturing banned single-use plastic (SUP). This is for the first time that MPCB has slapped the notice on a manufacturer after the ban on SUP came into being. MPCB also directed departments concerned to disconnect the electricity and water supply to the company for non-compliance of environment rules and regulations.
The unit was found manufacturing banned SUP such as carry bags during the surprise inspection that took place on July 5. As a result, the first offence fine of Rs 5,000 was also levied on this unit.
In the closure notice, the Board said, “It is observed that you are operating your unit without obtaining valid consent and plastic registration from MPCB. It is mandatory on your part to comply Maharashtra Plastic and Thermocol Products (Manufacturing, Usage, Sale, Transport, Handling and Storage) Notification dated March 23, 2018 and its amendment thereof issued by Government of Maharashtra.”
Similarly, one plastic manufacturing unit namely Om Plastic, Plot No. F-6, MIDC Wardha was also raided on Monday and 520 kg of banned single-use plastic was seized from the unit.
Another godown belonging to Sanjay Sajida, Plot No C-51, MIDC Wardha, was also faced MPCB action on Monday and one tonne of SUP was seized. Board has levied Rs 10,000 as a first offence in totality. Field Officer Manoj Watane, under the supervision of SRO, MPCB Anand Katole inspected the plastic units of MIDC Wardha.
The inspections and raids took place under the guidance of A M Kare, Regional Officer, MPCB, Nagpur.
After implementation of complete ban on SUP by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), MPCB is regularly conducting raids and inspections to curb the manufacturing of SUP in and around Nagpur city. MPCB seized a total of 1.5 tonne of SUP on Monday.
