The row over Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra’s remarks on Goddess Kali intensified on Thursday again as BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma reached Kali temple in the State capital to stage a silent dharna and to perform a ‘Sadbudhhi Yagya’ for Moitra and filmmaker Leena Manimekalai.
Moitra triggered a controversy on Tuesday, when, while speaking during a TV interview, she said that for her, Kali is a “meat-eating, alcohol accepting Goddess” and that every person has the right to worship gods and goddesses in their own way.
The TMC leader made the comments when she was asked about Toronto-based Indian filmmaker Leena Manimekalai, who promoted her film Kaali with a poster depicting a woman dressed as goddess smoking a cigarette.
Angered by the remarks of Moitra, 52-year-old Ramchandra, a Chaiwala from Bhopal, had complained to the Crime Branch on Wednesday evening. Ramchandra says that this has hurt his feelings. On the other hand, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also said that insults to Hindu deities will not be tolerated.
In a tweet, the Trinamool Congress said Moitra’s “views expressed on Goddess Kali have been made in her personal capacity and are not endorsed by the party in any manner or form. All India Trinamool Congress strongly condemns such comments.” CM Shivraj also angry with the statement: In this matter, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that religious sentiments have been hurt by the statement of TMC MP. Insults to Hindu deities will not be tolerated. After this the Crime Branch registered a case against the MP.
