Brushund Ganesha in Bhandara is one of the Ashtavinayaks of Vidarbha and has historic importance. Bhrushund Ganesha is said to be wish fulfilling God. Large number of devotees visit this ancient temple located in Mendha locality dominated by Gosavi community people.
The idol of Bhrushund Ganesha is 8 feet tall and its width is 4 feet. The idol was installed in 11th century. The idol of Ganesha has coat of shendoor (saffron) and is Chaturbhuj in shape carrying ankush and modak in the four hands.
Bhandara city is situated on the bank of Wainganga River and is famous as Brass City. where in past hundreds of families were busy and having business of making of brass utensils, the artisans would use hammer to carve the utensil and perhaps that derived the name Bhandara. The temple is said to have gained popularity when Chakradhar Swami visited the place in 1144. In the past people would worship the idol of Shree Hanuman and not much attention was paid to the idol of Ganesha.
As the time passed by people started believing the idol of Ganesha as ‘Jagrut’ which fulfills wishes of His devotees.
Today, not only during Ganeshotsav but every month the occasion of Chaturdashi is celebrated with religious fervour here and thousands of devotees participate in it. There is an ancient Shivlinga on the left side of the temple entrance that is covered with brass to protect it from erosion.
