Cold fails to dampen people’s spirit on Makar Sankranti

Beating the spine chilling cold waves, devotees celebrated Makar Sankranti Festival with religious fervor on Saturday. A throng of devotees was witnessed at different riverbanks of the city including Gwarighat, Tilwara Ghat, Bhedaghat, Lamhetaghat and other places while temples were also packed on the day.
It is said that Makar Sankranti is celebrated as a beginning of new harvest season and end of winter season. But this year, on the day Sankranti festival, Sanskardhani was completely covered with dense fog till 12:00 noon. Despite this spine chilling weather devotees managed to visit the banks of river Narmada at early dawn and took holy bath followed by donating Khichadi, rice, jaggery to the poor and needy. On the occasion, fairs were also organised in which vendors from adjoining villages installed their stalls. Further, the day also has a significance of being celebrated as the first festival of the Hindu calendar. On the day of Makar Sankranti, Lord Surya transits into the Capricorn (Makar) zodiac. People also made sweets of ‘Til Laddoo’ and snacks as a part of Sankranti celebration. On the other hand where netizens were enjoying the festive vibes, the police administration was deployed to maintain law and order in the city. The police administration has made separate parking arrangements near riverbanks for smooth operation of vehicles and crowd. Further, the administration also deployed divers and home guard officers at riverbanks to avoid any unfortunate incident. Jabalpur Municipal Corporation also made separate arrangements for the netizens, so that Sankranti rituals can be performed without any problem.
