To bring accuracy in land surveying and preparation of all types of survey maps with latitude and longitude, Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) have been set up at 77 places in the State. Of those, 12 stations have been started in Nagpur division. CORS will help in the instant availability of the desired accurate maps through the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Global Navigation Satellite System. The State Government has set up CORS under the Survey of India Department. For this, 77 spots -- approximately 70 km away from each other -- have been marked across the State. The use of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) will help in providing highly accurate and up-to-date maps. With the help of CORS GPS stations and rovers, it has become possible to create accurate maps.

In Nagpur division, 12 GPS stations have been operationalised, and based on that, maps of the entire land area are being prepared. Deputy Director of Land Records Vishnu Shinde informed ‘The Hitavada’ that village maps of each district of Nagpur division will be available through this system. The land measurement in the State started between 1830 and 1860. At that time, the land in the villages was measured according to the survey number, considering the village as a unit for the survey. Cone-chain system was used for that. By this method most of the village survey were completed.

Around 1920, the method of calculation changed and the the department began to calculate the portion by using a plane table. In this measurement, there was a difference in the baseline because the plane table had to be changed frequently during the measurement. In order to provide accurate and real time maps of the land, 12 CORS GPS stations have been started permanently in the department. One such station has been set up at Mahalgaon (Bhiwapur) village panchayat area of Nagpur district in the premises of Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) area of Kalameshwar.
