Labourer killed, six injured in mishap at under-construction flyover

 

 

 

 

In a major accident at the under-construction flyover in the city, a labourer was killed while six others were injured, on Saturday. The accident took place when construction of a drain was underway and a portion collapsed, trapping seven labourers inside. The deceased has been identified as Devendra from Damoh. Immediately after the incident, workers present at the site used JCB machines to remove soil and rescued trapped labourers but one labourer had breathed his last. The injured were rushed to a private hospital for treatment amidst chaos. Condition of two labourers is said to be critical. Construction of the flyover is being carried out by NCC company with a cost of Rs 1,120 crore. On Saturday afternoon, construction work of the flyover was in progress near Madan Mahal Police Station. Soil was being excavated to construct a drain under the bridge.

 

The work of reinforcing iron was also underway. In the afternoon, when seven labourers were working inside a big pit, soil collapsed and all the labourers got trapped inside. After the incident, loud screams of labourers created uproar. They immediately started rescue operation using JCB machines. They removed soil and all the trapped laborers were rescued. As per information, the injured labourers are from Jharkhand, Panna, Katni and Jabalpur. As soon as information about the incident was received, Madan Mahal Police along with CSP Ritesh Singh reached the scene. One of the injured labourers informed that the pit was being excavated to build a drain in the afternoon.

 

Work of removing the soil was also going on. Suddenly, soil collapsed and everyone got trapped. Station House Officer, Madan Mahal, Praveen Kumar Dhurve informed that an investigation has been initiated after the accident. Information is being gathered about how the accident took place. Police are also investigating where and due to whose negligence the incident happened. He informed that six injured have been admitted to National Hospital for treatment. All are out of danger. Supervisors responsible for monitoring the work of the flyover are also being questioned, he added.
