VIDARBHA logged full points from their opening Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Meghalaya at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur on Thursday. In a not very convincing show, Vidarbha managed a 32-run win over the minnows who did very well to restrict their opponents after inviting them to bat first. Vidarbha managed a sub-par score of 243-9 in 50 overs but the bowlers bowled in good areas to shoot out the rivals with 11 balls remaining in the second innings.
Dippu Sangma (10-0-43-4) gave Meghalaya an early opening by trapping Dhruv Shorey for four. Skipper-opener Atharva Taide (35; 44b, 6x4) and Aman Mokhade (17; 31b, 2x4) took the score from seven to 58 before the former, aggressive of the two gave a return catch to Sangma. After fall of Mokhade, Karun Nair (67; 80b, 5x4) and Akshay Wadkar (36; 49b, 2x4) put on 73 runs for the fourth wicket. Shubham Dubey (16) could not do much while all-rounders Harsh Dubey and Darshan Nalkande contributed an identical 20 each to see that the team finish close to 250. Sangma was well-assisted by Akash Choudhary (10-0-47-2).
Darshan Nalkande (9.1-1-35-3) drew first blood for Vidarbha castling Tanmay Mishra for four but opener Raj Biswa (24) and Nakul Verma (34) steadied the ship adding 51 runs. With Harsh and Taide picking one each and Mokhade effecting a run out, Meghalaya were soon 77-4 in 24.5 overs. The next pair of Kishan Lyngdoh (57; 75b, 7x4) and Swarajeet Das (44; 46b, 3x4) frustrated Vidarbha bowlers collecting 78 runs for the fifth wicket.
Rajneesh Gurbani (10-0-59-2) broke the partnership removing Lyngdoh and Akshay Karnewar (10-2-24-2) took next two to expose the tail that was polished off by Nalkande and Gurbani. Brief scores: Vidarbha 243-9 in 50 overs (K Nair 67, A Wadkar 36, A Taide 35; D Sangma 4-43, A Choudhary 2-47) bt Meghalaya 211 AO in 48.1 overs (K Lyngdoh 57, S Das 44; D Nalkande 3-35, A Karnewar 2-24, R Gurbani 2-59) by 32 runs.
