Circular Economy Parks for
pollution-free cities
Staff Reporter :
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said that the long- cherished dream of pollution free cities in the current scenario cannot be realised
unless the huge piles of solid waste are processed in a scientific way.
“We also need to explore economic opportunities in the field of solid waste management. Considering this, I think ‘circular economy’ will go a long way in this area,” he said while inaugurating the Integrated Solid Waste Management Project of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in presence of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and others.
Fadnavis further said that the Government will set up circular economy parks at various places in the State. He said
that the new project would
help the city to achieve good ranking for solid waste management in the country. “Lack of solid waste project had brought down Nagpur’s ranking in the country. But now the new project will help Nagpur improve its ranking in Swachh Bharat and other cleanliness related campaigns,” Fadnavis felt. Under the new initiative, the municipal body will process the waste generating from households, shops and establishments and dispose it in an environmental-friendly manner using the latest Dutch
technology.
For this, the civic body has signed an agreement with Netherlands-based company called Sustainable Business Development (SusBDe).
It is important to note that the civic body had made several attempts for effective disposal of city’s solid waste but it failed to derive satisfactory results. But under the new project, the civic body has resolved to plug the gaps of the previous attempts.
Nitin Gadkari, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister and Devendra Fadnavis laid the foundation stone of Integrated Solid Waste Management Project. Bart D Jong, Counsul General of Nederlands (Commerce); Krishna Khopde, MLA; Tekchand Savarkar, MLA; Dr Abhijit Chaudhari, Municipal Commissioner; Anchal Goyal, Additional Commissioner; Kedar Vaze, Director; Vrunda Thakur, Executive Director of Sustainable Business Development (SusBDe), Pyare Khan, JV Partner Chairman of ARC were present.
Waste water treatment project has been successfully started in the city. Cities account 65 percent of the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. Considering the importance of cities, efforts are being made at the Government level to make them pollution-free, pointed out Fadnavis.
“This project is going to be a milestone for Nagpur. In this project, byproducts like biogas, compost fertiliser, RDF will be produced by processing the waste, and the NMC will get royalty,” informed Gadkari. Krishna Khopde also shared his thoughts. Dr Abhijit Chaudhari gave introductory speech. Anchal Goyal, Additional Commissioner proposed a vote of thanks.
