People of Nagpur woke up to a surprise on Tuesday when they witnessed unexpected rain accompanied with chilling northerly winds, leading to a drop in day temperature drastically. Moderate rain lashed city throughout morning as it started at 7 am and lasted till 11.30 am. India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rains with thunderstorm and lightning all over Vidarbha, including Nagpur, on Tuesday. The sudden drop in temperature was noticeable, as the mercury dropped by 5 degree Celsius in just 24 hours. On Tuesday, Nagpur witnessed 19.0 degrees Celsius of maximum temperature, which was 11.6 degrees below normal. City also recorded the highest rainfall of 46.3 mm in all over Maharashtra in last 24 hours. Wardha also recorded 46.3 mm rains on Tuesday.
Like Nagpur, all other districts of Vidarbha also witnessed a minimum of 7 degrees decrease in normal maximum temperature on Tuesday. With 18.5 degrees Celsius, Yavatmal was the coldest place in Vidarbha on Tuesday. Amravati and Gondia also recorded the maximum temperature below 20 degrees Celsius. Due to sudden drop in maximum temperature and cloudy weather, people of Nagpur witnessed thick fog throughout the day. However, the visibility was just 500-1000 mt during day time. On Tuesday, most parts of Vidarbha including Akola (42.6 mm), Amravati (34.6 mm), Buldhana (32 mm), Chandrapur (31.4 mm), Gondia (23 mm), Washim (36 mm), and Yavatmal (15.1 mm) received unseasonal rains in double digit in last 24 hours.
Following the heavy rains on Tuesday, the weather department has issued an ‘Yellow Alert’ for Nagpur district for November 29 and 30 and light to moderate rain is likely to occur at some places. The administration requested citizens to take necessary precautions. It is necessary to stay inside the house during lightning and not to accidentally stand under a tree. If water is flowing over the bridge of the river or canal, then do not try to cross the bridge in any way. All the citizens of the district are requested to follow all the instructions of the government and be vigilant for self-protection.
