CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) provided consultancy to MIDC Butibori for commissioning of sewage treatment plants (STPs) with capacity of treating 50 cubic meters of sewage per day. The technological options include compact and improved Moving bed bio-film reactor (MBBR) and Submerged aerobic fixed film (SAFF). MBBR not only decomposes waste but also helps in nitrification and denitrification of sewage. SAFF is used to reduce the organic matter from sewage. CSIR-NEERI accomplished this task of STPs commissioning at MIDC Butibori as part of the Indo-European Water Technology Program Horizon 2020’ Project PAVITR.

The STPs were commissioned in the presence of Dr Sukumar Devotta, Former Director, CSIR-NEERI; Dr Atul Vaidya, Director CSIR-NEERI; Sunil Akulwar, SE, MIDC; Dr V A Mhaisalkar, Former Professor and Head, Civil Engineering, VNIT; Dr Hemant Kulkarni, Sr Principal Scientist, CSIR New Delhi; Dr Hemant Purohit, Former Chief Scientist and Head, EBGD, CSIR-NEERI; Dr Sadhana Rayalu, Senior Most Scientist, CSIR-NEERI; Dr Pawan Labhasetwar, Chief Scientist and Head, WTMD, CSIR-NEERI and Dr Ramesh Daryapurkar, CEO Lars Enviro Pvt Ltd.

The STPs installed at MIDC Butibori would offer improved sanitation with high treatment efficiency, with low energy inputs. The nutrient rich treated sewage will be reused for gardening in Public Parks. The technological options implemented for sewage treatment are cost-effective and involve an innovative bio-sludge management system to recover bio-sludge as manure. This Project is headed by Dr Girish Pophali, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-NEERI with technical support from Nitin Naik and Pravin Shesh, Executive Engineers and a team of Research Scholars from CSIR-NEERI.
