NAGPUR’S Ashish Deo etched his name in history by not only completing the challenging Deccan Cliffhanger 2023 but doing so in the self-supported format, earning him the coveted Race Across America (RAAM) qualification. Deo thus became the first cyclist from Nagpur (born and brought up) to accomplish this gruelling race in the self-supported category. Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, Deo brought an international flavour to the race, having had limited cycling experience in India before taking on the DC challenge. The DC10, as it is aptly named for its 10th edition, spans 643 kilometres from Pune to Goa via Belgaon and Hubli, featuring numerous tough climbs, flyovers, diversions, challenging traffic, and road conditions.

Despite facing headwinds, pollution and heat, Deo crossed the finish line in an impressive 36:03 hours. Deo was guided by experienced Dr Amit Samarth from Miles and Milers Training Academy. Dr. Samarth’s expertise played a crucial role in Deo’s success in qualifying for RAAM. Before tackling DC 2023, Tokyo-based Deo had already completed the challenging Super Randonneur and participated in Japan's renowned Fuji climb race, showcasing his passion and commitment to cycling. With the completion of Deccan Cliffhanger 2023, Deo has transcended into the realm of ultra-cycling, leaving an indelible mark on the cycling community.
