In what could be called as a historic moment Dr Raman Singh, who served as the Chief Minister of the State for 15 consecutive years from 2003 to 2018, has been elected as the Speaker of the Chhattisgarh Assembly. The process of electing the Speaker commenced after the swearing-in of newly elected members on the first day of the State Assembly session. Dr Raman Singh was the sole nominee for the position of Speaker, and the proposal for his appointment was made by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, supported by Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao and Leader of Opposition Dr Charan Das Mahant.

The proposal received widespread support from members across the party lines. Before the formal proposals, former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel also expressed his support for Dr Raman Singh’s candidature. Other members, including Brijmohan Agrawal, Ajay Chandrakar, Kedar Kashyap, Punnulal Mohale, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, and Bhavana Bohra also seconded the proposal. Following the overwhelming support in the Assembly, Protem Speaker Ram Vichar Netam announced the appointment of Dr Raman Singh as the Speaker of the Chhattisgarh Assembly. Dr Raman Singh, expressing gratitude to the members, took his place on the Speaker’s chair. Dr Raman Singh served as the National Vice President of the BJP after losing the Chief Minister’s post in 2018.
