RAIPUR,
In a bid to extend its political dominance, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has initiated a strategic move to replace the Congress rule in Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC), echoing the success of its state-level campaign with the slogan ‘Badal ke Rahibo Ab Nahi Sahibo’. The BJP Councillors are gearing up to challenge the current Mayor Aijaz Dhebar, urging his resignation on moral grounds. The Leader of Opposition Minal Choubey highlighted the absence of a Congress majority in the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC), emphasising that the State also lacks a Congress Government. Leveraging this situation, Choubey asserted that Mayor Aijaz Dhebar should step down from his position. The demand for resignation is grounded in a moral argument, signaling a prelude to a potential no-confidence motion if the Mayor refuses to resign voluntarily.
Minal Choubey revealed that preparations are underway to bring a no-confidence motion against Mayor Aijaz Dhebar. The BJP, armed with 31 councillors, asserts a majority and claims additional support from Congress councillors and independent representatives. Notably, two Congress councillors have already been expelled for six years, further weakening the opposition’s position. Choubey criticised the performance of the Congress- led RMC, citing a lack of development initiatives and the failure of projects. She argued that the people are facing difficulties rather than experiencing progress, underscoring the need for a change in leadership. This critique is substantiated by the BJP’s consecutive victories in Municipal Corporation elections, marking a shift in political dynamics. The BJP’s pursuit of power in RMC follows the tenure of Mayor Aijaz Dhebar, with predecessors Pramod Dubey and Kiranmayi Nayak having held the significant post. The BJP’s sustained efforts to secure municipal leadership indicate a political landscape marked by fierce competition and a dynamic power struggle.
As the BJP Councillor group intensifies efforts to unseat Mayor Aijaz Dhebar, the political dynamics in Raipur Municipal Corporation are poised for significant changes. The impending no-confidence motion reflects the BJP’s determination to capitalise on the current political climate and assert its influence in the municipal governance sphere. The evolving situation warrants close attention as the political tussle unfolds, potentially reshaping the leadership landscape in Raipur.
