DIVYANG athletes of Nagpur excelled in the recently concluded State-level Divyang Sports Meet which was organised by Divyang Welfare Department at Pune. In the competition, around 206 Divyang players from five divisions participated and Nagpur Divyangs and deaf and dumb sportspersons emerged top three finishers in their respective categories. The athletes did not disappoint Union Minister Nitin Gadkari who had made special arrangement for the players and helped them travel by train to Pune in specially attached bogies.
A team of 130 Divyang players from Nagpur participated in the competition under the able guidance of Umesh Warjurkar. The players won a total on 96 medals including 47 gold, 27 silver and 22 bronze medals in the competition. Nagpur city’s Divyang and deaf and dumb athletes emerged champions in the State while blind and specially abled players finished third in their categories. According to a press release, Gadkari had asked the railways department to arrange for the travels of the players after he came to know that the players were unable to get proper transportation for the competition. Even MLC Pravin Datke contacted State Railway minister. The team got two special bogies attached to the train to Pune, the release added. Soumya Sharma, CEO, Zilla Parishad Nagpur, Kishor Bhoyar from District Social Welfare Department and others congratulated all the medal winners. Vilas Kelwade, Amit Soni, Rani Dhurve, Swarakdeep Dhurve, Nikhil Shengde, Komal Raut, Amol Vaidya, Sanjvini Shinde, Ankita Kadu and Saniya Gafoor were some of the medal winners.
