In a tragic incident, two labourers, engaged in cleaning a well, died on Sunday after they inhaled toxic gas emanating from it, police said. The incident was reported in Raj Nagar area of Sadar police station. The deceased were identified as Amar Ratanlal Markam (22) and Shankar Arjun Uike (24), both residents of Siddheshwar Nagar, Besa Road, Manewada. According to police, the labourers had been assigned to clean the well. Two more colleagues, Kishore Trinath Uike and Koyal Dina Naitam, were also acommpanying them.
The owner of the house, Sunil Narsingh Rao, a resident of Plot No. 15, Raj Nagar, had called the two colleagues to clean the well of his house. Koyal then called Amar and Shankar for help. The well was about 50 feet deep, and the labourers were cleaning it for about three hours when suddenly Amar and Shankar complained of breathlessness and lost consciousness due to toxic gas accumulation. The two other colleagues, Koyal and Kishore, informed Rao about the incident. However, the two labourers were already dead by the time help arrived.
The police and fire department officials rushed to the spot, and the bodies of the two labourers were fished out of the well in the evening. The police registered a case of accidental death and sent the bodies for post-mortem. The incident highlights the need for proper safety measures and precautions while undertaking such hazardous jobs. A police official said that Shankar, one of the victims, was the sole breadwinner of his family after his brother's death two years ago. With his untimely demise, the whole family has come under a severe financial crisis. Some of the relatives of the deceased alleged that electrocution might be the cause of the deaths, which needs to be investigated thoroughly.
