Thyroid nodules are a fairly common finding in common public especially among women and even if most of them are not cancerous, its treatment is necessary. Most of the times, patients demand treatment when thyroid swellings become visible from outside. For this cosmetic reason, patients used to undergo surgery under full anaesthesia. However, the most latest treatment for these swellings which does not require any surgery is now available in Jabalpur. This technique is called as ‘Microwave Ablation’ and only a handful of hospitals in India have this facility. Jabalpur is one of the kind in entire Central India.
This most advanced treatment of thyroid swellings requiring no anaesthesia, no surgery and no incision. Dr Sanjay Kumar Yadav, Breast, Thyroid and Endocrine surgeon is doing this procedure regularly. Seeing his expertise, recently AIIMS invited him to deliver a talk on this technique as they are also planning to start this procedure. Dr Yadav explained that Microwave Ablation is a new, promising technique among minimally invasive treatments of thyroid nodules. This procedure is not widely available yet in majority of hospitals.
He added that in this technique, a needle is inserted inside the swelling which delivers microwave. This leads to shrinkage of thyroid swelling over a period of time. Patient goes home just after one hour of the procedure. This service is delivered among patients at only High Volume breast thyroid and endocrine surgery centre in central India, Department of Surgery, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College.
