International Yoga Day was celebrated at Raj Bhavan with Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan engaging in Yogasana and Pranayama. Officials and employees from Raj Bhavan also participated. Gyanesh Sharma, the Chairman of Chhattisgarh Yoga Commission and Amrit Khalkho, Secretary to the Governor also participated . During the event, Governor Harichandan emphasised the ancient origins of yoga, spanning thousands of years. He highlighted the global recognition it garnered after Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the celebration of International Yoga Day on June 21, 2015, as designated by the United Nations. Since then, people worldwide have become more aware of yoga and its numerous physical and mental health benefits. The Governor described yoga as a spiritual discipline, rooted in a profound science that establishes harmony between the mind and body, enabling a healthy way of life. He further mentioned that this year’s International Yoga Day theme was ‘Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbankam’ which signifies the unity of humanity as one global family.
The Governor emphasizsed the collective significance of practicing yoga for the welfare of all, highlighting Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the International Yoga Day program at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Over 180 countries were represented in the event, a moment of immense pride for India. Governor Harichandan expressed the need to go beyond mere asanas and pranayama, emphasising the importance of understanding meditation as a means to achieve a meditative state. He stated that yoga harmonises the body and mind, thoughts and actions, as well as humankind and nature. The practice paves the way for overall health and well-being, transcending exercise to foster a sense of oneness with oneself, the world, and nature.
Gyanesh Sharma, stressed that yoga should not be treated as a mere formality, but rather integrated into one’s daily life. He highlighted the Yoga Commission’s efforts in organising regular free yoga camps across various locations in Chhattisgarh. The yoga session at Raj Bhavan saw enthusiastic participation from various officials and employees, including Legal Advisor Rajesh Srivastava and Deputy Secretary Deepak Agarwal. Under the guidance of Yoga instructor Anand Sahu and his team, yoga exercises were conducted, and the Governor extended his appreciation by presenting certificates to the instructors.
