Tiger carcass found in Umred-Karhandla

A fully grown tiger was found dead under mysterious circumstances near a nullah in Compartment No. 1418 of Umred Paoni Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary (UPKWS). On Saturday morning, a forest guard named Jafar Ali Saiyad noticed some foul smell in the area while patrolling. When he followed the smell, he found a putrefied carcass of an animal due to which it was difficult to identify that it is a body of a tiger. After getting the information that a carcass was spotted, senior officials rushed the spot with a forest team and started panchnama of the site as per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
A Shrilakshmi, Field Director, Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR) and Pramod Panchbhai, Divisional Forest Officer, Bor Tiger Reserve also remained present during the panchanama. The veterinary team performed the autopsy of the carcass on the spot. According to the Field Director of PTR, “All body parts including nails, whiskers, skin and teeth of the carcass were intact. And after the autopsy the last rites of the carcass were performed at the same place as per SOP of NTCA.”
She said, “In the initial investigation, it is found that the tiger was killed in a territorial fight with another big cat.” Mangesh Thengni, ACF, Selu; Avinash Londhe, Honorary Wildlife Warden, Nagpur; Praful Bhambhurkar, NTCA Representative; Dr Rohini Tembhurne, Live Stock Officer; Mangesh Tathe, RFO, Umred (Wildlife) and other officials were present during the panchanama. The further investigation is going on under the supervision of Field Director of PTR.
