Nagpur, known for its multi - cultural traditions, is also cherished as the zone for diverse cuisines from different regions. Its residents representing various cultures and ethnicities, contribute their flavours to the local cuisine. From street food to fine-dining, the city offers a plethora of options to suit diverse tastes and preferences. Driving through the city on any given day, one will notice the bustling eateries that cater to customers day and night. In the recent years, the culinary landscape of the city has transformed with the emergence of cafes. They are known for cosy ambience, themed interiors, and diverse food menus, these establishments attract young customers. These have become the go-to places to have a relaxing time with friends and family.
Sunita Nair, a homemaker, shared with ‘The Hitavada’, “Dining out occasionally with family and friends provides a refreshing break from our daily routine. My family enjoys trying different types of food. Also, the restaurants I visit serve delicious dishes prepared by skilled chefs, which are hard to replicate at home with the same ingredients.” Shreyas Chinchmalatpure, an architect, adds, “There are a lot of options available in Nagpur as compared to more developed cities, like Pune, when it comes to food. I like taking out my family for dinner whenever possible or to have desserts. At home, women are mostly occupied with household chores, so taking them out helps them relax and gives everyone a chance to converse and catch up with each other.” Opinions on this growing trend, however, are not unanimous. While many residents applaud the flourishing culture for providing a social space, others express concerns about its impact on traditional family dining at home. Doubts are raised regarding the hygiene standards of the kitchens, to the extent that some people bring their own water bottles when they visit street food stalls or even restaurants.
Deepa Ajay, a homemaker, says that she always prefers eating a home-cooked meal above all else. “My concern is about the quality of ingredients they use outside. Additionally, sharing a meal within the comfort of our own home strengthens family bond.” “Dining in restaurants or having street food is a personal choice. I enjoy cooking and eating at home, because I know exactly what goes into my meals and can make them exactly how I like. I get to experiment with different ingredients and cooking techniques,” says Suhas Umale, a post graduate student. The availability of options in market is increasing, but is this benefiting in the long run? Due to this, the consumption of food has risen. There exists a constant tussle between needs and wants. According to a citizen, Abhijeet Bhamburkar, the increased availability of food options in every nook and corner leads to temptations and over-consumption, negatively impacting both bodies and minds.
Many people hold the opinion that the home-cooking culture, deeply ingrained in Indian households, is gradually diminishing. As a result, future generations risk losing touch with the valuable skills and recipes passed down by the elders. Nandu Tandulkar, a resident of Hanuman Nagar, said that the pursuit of economic growth should not lead to neglect of a valuable culture. “In frequent consumption of outside food, the practice of home-cooking will be lost in no time.” Well-known chef Vishnu Manohar, told ‘The Hitavada’, “Having visited various locations, I can confidently say Nagpur is by far one of the best centres for all types of food. From Sindhi to Continental, one can find a range of cuisines without compromisation on taste. Despite the availability of multi-cultural food, the demand for regional dishes remains strong, creating a seamless blend.”
Asked about his opinion on the recent upsurge of cafes in Nagpur, he replied, “It is important for such ventures to grow. Young entrepreneurs are coming up with new ideas to grow businesses and are well-informed about the process behind food preparation.” Nonetheless, the surge in Nagpur’s dining scene has undoubtedly brought economic benefits to the city. It has created job opportunities and stimulated entrepreneurship. The presence of cafes has not only attracted locals but also drawn tourists. Balancing this trend with the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits and preserving family traditions will be crucial in ensuring that the essence is celebrated for generations to come.
