“With a thought that Nagpur’s Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in its 75th year should wear a new look, we are ready to give the required funds. While developing good infrastructure facilities, the hospital should be able to provide quality treatment to poor and needy,” stated Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Fadnavis was speaking at a ceremony held to perform digital bhoomipujan of works worth Rs 172 crore.
District Collector Dr Vipin Itankar had prepared a proposal of modernisation of GMCH and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH). Of the total plan of Rs 550 crore, Fadnavis performed the bhoomipujan of the works worth Rs 172 crore.
Maharashtra State Assembly Speaker Dr Rahul Narvekar, South Nagpur MLA Mohan Mate, East Nagpur MLA Krishna Khopde, MLC Pravin Datke, ex-Mayor Sandip Joshi, Dean of GMCH Dr Raj Gajbhiye, Head, Department of Neurosurgery at Super Speciality Hospital Dr Pramod Giri were seated on the dais.
Announcing that the platinum jubilee function would be conducted in a grand
manner, Fadnavis said, “This hospital treats 5 lakh patients every year. Now it is high time that we need to improve the working style and level of treatment. We are already contemplating change in the new plan.”
He also reiterated that modern facilities would be made available for treating sicklecell patients. The works of which bhoomipujan was performed include Cancer department, new hostel of 250 capacity for residents, girls hostel, protection wall, skywalk to go from trauma care centre to main building, new paying wards, upgradation of auditorium, renovation of guest house.
Dr Rahul Narvekar, Mohan Mate also spoke on the occasion. Dr Raj Gajbhiye gave introductory remarks.
‘I am emotionally
attached to GMCH’
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed, “I am born at GMCH so I have special attachment to this institute. I want this institute to become world class. GMCH should attain the level of Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). We have to erase the general concept about government hospitals where poor get just-for-the-sake services.” He also expressed that he would try President of India to grace the platinum jubilee celebrations of GMCH to be held in December this year.
