PARTITION HORRORS

time and tide

Mr. Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, is absolutely right in saying that people are still facing the brunt of 1947 Partition horrors. The Partition of India was a dark chapter, which inflicted deep wounds on the psyche of the millions of people affected. In fact, some of the present-day problems have their roots in those wounds. The Partition divided the society deeply, sowed the seeds of communal strife that would follow, and left behind scars to be nursed by the generations to follow. The dark chapter also created a sense of alienation among certain sections, who had come to India with hope but the then ruling dispensation failed to address their grievances, probably because of too many tasks at hand or out of sheer apathy towards assessing the impact of the moment on future. The hatred it generated has killed lakhs and displaced crores of people. The problems arising out of the adverse impacts of the tragedy, have resulted in India paying the price. Though the present-day Government has started acknowledging the Partition horrors by observing the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, this process will take years to heal the wounds of the past and soothe the nerves of those affected due to the tragedy.
GOOD GAINS
THOUGH the series was meant for wholesale experimentation, the fans were not ready for India’s loss against the West Indies in the Twenty20 games. It did happen but the experience has given a lot many things for the team management to think upon as the Men in Blue prepare for the Asia Cup tournament and later the all-important 50-over ICC World Cup. The T20 series saw a plethora of combinations that coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Hardik Pandya played with. It did bring up some interesting results as the youngsters adapted to the situations and tried to push their claim with handy cameos. Among the gains that could be easily counted on the top were the innings of Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan. Both the youngsters showed fine maturity on testing pitches against a vastly-professional T20 outfit like the Windies. Varma was quite impressive while chasing the target as he held together one end while never shying away from going for the shots. It is a superb quality needed for a middle-order batsman especially in the sub-continent where the next tournaments would be played. One thing that needs a thought is the lack of flexibility in middle-order. It cannot be ignored.
