Gandhisagar lake turning into mosquito-breeding ground

As The work on desilting at Gandhisagar has stopped due to monsoon, grass and shrubs have started growing on the lake bed. Now, in the middle of the lake, one could see a patches of grass. The wet grassland has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. With dengue threat looming over the city, those residing nearby the lake are left to fend for themselves. Former corporator Pramod Chikhle led a delegation of citizens to meet Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr Abhijeet Chaudhary and submitted a memorandum seeking removal of the grass from the Gandhisagar lake bed. The area falls under Dhantoli Zone of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
 
The delegation included Arun Gadge, Mithun Bhondale, Rakesh Gawande, Narendra Gautam, Shubham Kale, Haribhau Borkar, Kalpana Surve, Manisha Jichkar, Vibha Sawant, Sandhya Ashwale and Nirja Patil. Gandhisagar lake is at the center of the city and the work of beautification of the lake is going on. The beautification work includes deepening of the lake and desilting. So the land was dry. During monsoon, the work has come to standstill. Grass has taken over the lake bed and at some patches, it has reached the height of four to five feet. There are jogging tracks on all sides of the lake and many citizens come for a morning and evening walks, Chikhle pointed out to the Municipal Commissioner during the discussion. Chikhle has demanded that the Municipal Commissioner should order the officers concerned to clear grass and restore the beauty of the lake.
