Festive demand firms-up flower prices

With the arrival of Ganesh festival the demand for natural flowers and especially the pooja flowers are witnessing heavy demand resulting in prices shooting up. With the phenomenal rise in demand for flowers prices are swelling and in some cases they have doubled as compared to a few days ago. The prices of flowers like marigold (Zendu) which are generally used in pooja has increased remarkably, said Jaywant Rannaware, President of Mahatma Fule Pushpa Utpadak Sangh while speaking to The Hitavada. Rannaware further said that on account of the festive season the Netaji wholesale flower market situated at Sitabuldi has suddenly come alive and is swarming with people especially during morning hours.
 
“This is the usual trend and happens every year during the festive season and this year is no exception,” he said. Flower vendors are optimistic that this years festive season will be better than the previous one. The flower prices in the wholesale market: Marigold (Zendu) is being quoted at Rs 50 per kg to Rs 70 per kg, as compared to a few days ago at Rs 40 to Rs 50 kg and Marigold small is being quoted at Rs 40 per kg to Rs 70 per kg, as compared to a few days ago at Rs 30 to Rs 50 kg. Similarly, Shevanti is being quoted at Rs 120 kg, as compared to a few days ago at Rs 40 kg. The Tuberose (Nishigandha) is being quoted at Rs 700 kg to Rs 800 kg, as compared to Rs 200 kg to Rs 250 kg a few days ago.
 
Also, Desi Rose and Divine (Shirdi) Rose are being quoted at Rs 150 per kg, as compared to a few days ago at Rs 50 kg and Dutch Rose at Rs Rs 100 to Rs 200 per bundle (20 pieces), as compared to Rs 60 to Rs 100 per bundle. In the cut flower category, Gerbera is being quoted at Rs 50 bundle (10 pieces), Carnation at Rs 200 per bundle (20 pieces), Orchid at Rs 300 per bundle to Rs 400 bundle (20 pieces), Chrysanthemums at Rs 200 per bundle (10 pieces) and Lillium at Rs 400 per bundle (10 pieces) at the wholesale market. Farmers residing in a radius of 150 km to 200 km bring flowers to sell in the Netaji wholesale market. To meet the heavy demand, traders are sourcing flowers from far off places like Washim, Marathwada, Akola, Nashik, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Pune.
