The status of maternal deaths, infant deaths, child deaths, still births is alarming. The number of deaths is rising in number. The details of the death statistics came to the fore through RTI, sought by an activist Abhay Kolarkar. Based on the statistics provided by Maharashtra State Family Welfare office, the Nagpur district has registered most maternal and infant deaths while Pune topped in still births in last three years. If the statistics of last three years of maternal and still births is taken into account, then one would find that, 1,488 maternal deaths were reported in the financial year 2021-22, which is higher than the two previous years. State witnessed 3,205 maternal deaths between the year 2020 to 2022 while 56,504 still birth cases have been recorded from 2019-20 to 2022-23.
 
In maternal deaths, Nagpur reported 3,971 deaths followed by Pune (249), Amravati (103), Akola (102), and Yavatmal (59). In infant deaths cases (age: upto one year), Nagpur topped with 3,971 cases followed by Akola (3,255), Pune (2,706) Amravati (2,105), Yavatmal (685). Nagpur reported highest child deaths (1-5 years of age) too as 778 children died from 2019 to till now. Pune followed Nagpur with 477 deaths, Amravati (358), Akola (218) and Yavatmal registered 119 child deaths in last three years.

In still birth cases Pune registered 3,845 cases which is the highest. Amravati followed Pune with 2,541 cases, Nagpur (2,325), Akola (2,073) and Yavatmal (412). The State welfare office has made it clear that, the data was taken from Hospital Management Integrated Service (HMIS) portal and State Reporting sheets. In statistics of still birth, the State witnessed fluctuation in number. In 2019-20, the number was 14,614 which has gone down to 13,959 in 2020-21. It again increased to 14,296 in 2021-22 and again reduced to 13,635 in the financial year 2022-23.
